Overview
Rest of Season Projection estimates what a player's completed regular-season profile could look like if his current season-to-date pace continued through a full NFL regular season.
It answers one simple question:
What could this player's final season profile look like if his current pace continues?
Why It Exists
Receiving Intelligence describes the player's current receiving profile during an unfinished season.
Rest of Season Projection extends that current pace to the end of the regular season, giving users a consistent way to compare an in-progress season with the type of completed-season profile evaluated by Historical Intelligence.
How the Projection Works
The projection begins with the player's current season-to-date performance.
Cumulative production is extended across a full regular-season schedule, while the player's observed efficiency rates remain based on the performance recorded to date.
The projected values are then used to calculate a projected season profile.
The projection does not use OTI, Baseline or Reliability to modify the result.
A Pace-Based Projection
Rest of Season Projection is a pace-based estimate.
It does not attempt to predict injuries, changes in playing time, coaching decisions, schedule effects or changes in team structure.
It shows what the completed profile could look like if the player's current pace and observed rates were maintained.
Rest of Season Projection extends the player's current season-to-date pace and observed efficiency rates across a full regular-season schedule.
Relationship with Receiving Intelligence
Receiving Intelligence evaluates where the player stands today.
Rest of Season Projection takes that current season-to-date performance and extends it to a possible completed-season outcome.
The projection changes as the player's cumulative production and observed efficiency change during the season.
Relationship with Historical Intelligence
Historical Intelligence evaluates completed NFL regular seasons.
Rest of Season Projection estimates a possible completed-season profile before the current season has ended.
It should not be treated as a final Historical Intelligence score. The final evaluation can only be calculated after the regular season is complete and the full season data is available.
How to Interpret the Projection
Compare the projected profile with the player's current profile and with completed Historical Intelligence profiles.
A stronger projected profile indicates that maintaining the current pace would lead to a more substantial completed-season result.
A similar projected and current profile indicates that the player's present season-to-date pace already provides a representative picture of the likely final profile under unchanged conditions.
Projection Confidence
Projection Confidence communicates how much of the regular season has already been observed.
Early-season projections are based on a smaller sample and can change substantially as additional games are played.
Later-season projections are supported by more completed games and therefore provide a more developed picture of the player's season pace.
Projection Confidence does not change the projected score itself.
What Rest of Season Projection Is Not
Rest of Season Projection is not a guarantee, a start-or-sit recommendation or a prediction that the player's role and efficiency will remain unchanged.
It is a transparent pace-based estimate built from the information currently available.
Do not treat Rest of Season Projection as a guarantee or as a final Historical Intelligence score. It is a pace-based estimate built from an unfinished season.
Using the Full Profile
Rest of Season Projection should be read as one part of the broader Receiving Intelligence profile:
- Current Profile explains where the player stands today.
- OTI explains the direction of recent development.
- Baseline compares the current profile with the previous completed season.
- Reliability explains the evidence supporting the displayed trend.
- Rest of Season Projection extends the current pace to a possible final season profile.
These components provide different information. They are displayed together, but OTI, Baseline and Reliability do not feed the projection calculation.
